Rahsaan Roland Kirk
The above is an excerpt from the film by Adam Kahan "The Case of the Three-sided Dream" (2014), with a segment about Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1935-1977) and his post-stroke playing.
Rahsaan had been blind from infancy, and investigated one-handed saxophone playing as early as the late 1960’s. He became known for many innovations including playing several instruments simultaneously. He did this by pioneering adaptations to conventional instruments mechanisms that enabled “one-handed” playing. With one instrument in each hand he would play and improvise hsarmobnizations. After Rahsaan had a stroke in 1975, he returned to performing on some of the saxophones he had previously done “one-handed” work.
